Sir Steve Redgrave CBE presented £27,000 to the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and Macmillan Cancer Care at Alder Hey Hospital today from sponsorship raised by participants of the Sefton Triathlon.

Sir Steve was joined by three other Olympians for the presentation: silver medalist cyclist Steve Cummings, bronze medalist swimmer Steve Parry, and bronze medalist high jumper Steve Smith.

More than 1,000 children and adults took part in the Sefton Triathlon event in July which saw them swim, cycle and run to raise money for the two charities. Many of them were given special medals today to mark their achievements.

Ken Fretwell, Fundraising and Volunteer Manager for the British Heart Foundation, said: “The British Heart Foundation is delighted to be receiving this money today. It will help us continue to fund our paediatric nurses at Alder Hey Hospital who provide care and support to children with heart disease and their families. The event was a huge success; as well as raising vital funds, it got the people of Merseyside active which helped their own hearts!”

Gillian Wilson, Macmillan Cancer Support's Fundraising Manager for
Merseyside, said: "Macmillan are delighted to have been chosen as one of the charities benefiting from this year's Sefton Triathlon and would like to congratulate and thank all the participants who took part. All funds raised for Macmillan will go towards providing vital cancer services for children at Alder Hey."

Royal Liverpool Children’s NHS Trust Chief Executive Tony Bell said: “We are very grateful for the generosity and support of all involved in raising this money which is being used provide services for children and young people at Alder Hey.”

Both charities and Alder Hey would like to thank the Sefton Triathlon Committee, St Mary’s College and St Mary’s Preparatory School in Crosby for organising the event, and Sir Steve Redgrave for his continued support.
