Walking with Giants

Walking with Giants logo

The Walking WIth Giants Foundation is a liverpool based voluntary non-profit making registered charity (Reg No 1123246)  set up to enrich the lives of individuals and families affected by Primordial Dwarfism.

About Primordial Dwarfism

Primordial Dwarfism is one of the rarest conditions in the world and only effects 250 individuals in the world. This form of collective dwarfism ( 5 sub-types) is different from the other 200 plus forms of dwarfism, as the bodies of individuals affected by Primordial Dwarfism are in total proportion.

Individuals affected by Primordial Dwarfism are formally recognised by the medical fraternity as the smallest people in the world. They age to become adults trapped inside a young child's body, many the size of a very small 18 month infant.

They face many common and rare medical problems which for a Primordial Dwarf can be fatal. They spend many months in hospital recovering via life support from the likes of simple chest infestion. Along with being treated for the many underlying medical problems associated with tht condition. This has a tremendous affect on family life, especially if parents have other children and work to contend with.

With this restricted height comes restricted social involvement. They cannot participate in many social or sporting activities due to their frail bodies, albeit their personalities and love for life means they will try anything given the opportunity.

About the WWGF

The WWGF was set up by the parents of a young Sefton child (Alex Connerty) who has Primordial Dwarfism in 2008, as they realised that there was no support group and little information known about the condition here in the UK. They themselves, had to travel to America in 2007 to get answers to many questions that could not get answered here in the UK.

Since then, the Foundation has become one the World's leading centre's of information about the condition. The Foundation has set up a medical review board that now includes experts from the UK and America working together to find the root causes of the Primordial Dwarfism and some of the underlying medical problems associated with the Primordial Dwarfism sub-types.

What We Do

Apart from education and awareness, one of our main goals is to bring individuals affected by Primordial Dwarfism and their families from around the UK and the rest of the world together to provide support and education, along with giving the children and their siblings something to smile about.

Every year in Liverpool we hold an annual convention where families, specialists and other interested parties (Local and National Health Authorities, Education providers and Social Services) attend to meet international experts to gain knowledge and a common understanding of the conditions and environmental issues that afflict the children and also the parents and siblings.

In additional to this, we try to treat the children and parents to 5 days of fun and excitement without them having to worry about anything. For a Primordial Dwarf, this is a trip of a life-time and allows them, for one week every year to mix with individuals like themselves. This is so important as they realise they are not alone in a world that is not made for them. It allows them to understand that they are no different from anyone else.

We also provides grants to families for but not limited to:

  • Medical care and costs (especially international families)
  • Adaptive Equipment
  • Toys
  • Clothes
  • Furniture
  • Short breaks for respite
  • Holidays

The WWGF via its supporters makes this happen, Will you be the next giant to help us make a magic event come true and help Primordial Dwarfs reach their full potential.
