We `re Supporting Maggie

Freshfield Primary School was visited by Olympic heroes yesterday. Bronze swimming medalist Steve Parry and Steve Smith, bronze medalist high jumper, encouraged the children to take part in this year`s Sefton Triathlon on Sat June 30th.This is a great family event open to all ages from 7yrs upwards with all competitors encouraged to raise money for nominated charities. Freshfield pupil Maggie McCullock aged 11 will be the `face of the 2007 Sefton Triathlon` and she will be raising money for the British Heart Foundation.
She is taking part even though she has had 3 major heart operations. "I am excited to take part. I have been training by doing a few lengths and I am going on holiday next week to Spain so I can practise in the pool there". The two Steve`s explained the event and encouraged pupils to support Maggie. With them were British Heart Foundation community fund-raising manager Ken Fretwell and Sefton Triathlon`s Vincent Moran. Steve Parry said, " This is the Biggest Community Triathlon in the World. It is really well co-ordinated and I can`t believe how much support there is. When I was 11 I sat in a room like this in my school and an olympic medalist came in in his England tracksuit with his medal and I thought "I want to go to the Olympics."
Steve Smith said," I retired in 1999, really prematurely. I decided I really wanted to get myself fit again. I kept putting it off until I was asked to do the triathlon and I went to see some children in Alder Hey Children`s Hospital, which convinced me to take part".
Headteacher Vin Osbaldeston said, " I am also taking part. I already do some cycling and running but I have been training for the swimming. Maggie has been through so muchand she always bounces back. She is an example to us all."
Sir Steve Redgrave CBE is also the Event Patron which has raised over £65,000 for nominated charities and the aim is to raise £35,000 this year to take the total to over £100,000.
